Names of God

Yahweh Zurih יהוה צור

The Lord my rock

Rock is the translation of the Hebrew "zur" (zurih) and "sela". In many Bible passages it points to Jesus the Son of God - Christ the Rock!

Zur describes a hard and large rock that is unconquerable and unapproachable. Sela means a cleft of the rock or a jagged rock, which serves as a refuge or as shelter.

Both expressions figuratively represent God’s power and might, especially for the protection of His chosen ones.

Anyone standing on the rock of Jesus Christ and trusting in Him will find refuge, and has the foundation which saves and provides a heavenly dwelling - for ever and ever.

Psalms 144:1+2 (ESV)

Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; he is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.

Psalms 18:1b-3 (ESV)

I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.

1 Samuel 2:1+2 (ESV)

And Hannah prayed and said, "My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God."

Psalms 91:1+2 (ESV)

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say1 to the Lord, "My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

1 Corinthians 10:1-4 (ESV)

For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,1 that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:11 (ESV)

For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Luke 6:46-49 (ESV)

"Why do you call me "Lord, Lord," and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."

John 14:1-6 (ESV)

"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

2 Timothy 4:18 (ESV)

The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
